Summary

What are Kegel exercises?

  • Kegel exercises are exercises designed to strengthen what are commonly known as the pelvic floor muscles (technically pubococcygeus muscles or PC muscles).

Kegels History

  • Kegels origin is in exercises specially developed for use by women before and after child birth by Californian gynecologist Arnold Kegel (1894–1981)

During child birth, women's pelvic floor muscles can become stretched, giving rise to bowel and urine leakage problems in later life if they are not returned to their original strength and tone.
(These pelvic floor dysfunction problems can and do affect men although, of course, anatomically for different reasons)

  • Californian gynecologist Arnold Kegel (1894–1981) determined over a period of 18 years research that certain exercises (now known as Kegel exercises, Pelvic floor exercises, PC exercises or just plain Kegels) performed before and after child birth, would help the pelvic floor muscles redevelop their strength and tone.
  • In 1948 Kegel published this ground breaking paper:

"A Nonsurgical Method of Increasing the Tone of Sphincters and their Supporting Structures"

    Arnold H. Kegel, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Assistant Professor of Gynecology University of Southern California School of Medicine, 1948

    - which was revolutionary at the time for it's explanation of the important functions performed by what was then a relatively poorly understood part of the human anatomy (the pelvic floor muscles).

So how does knowing about Kegal exercises benefit men?

  • Recent research from England has demonstrated pelvic floor exercises - specifically adapted for the male anatomy - are as beneficial for men, as they have long been known to be for women. So much so that reseachers are recommending men start exercising their pelvic floor muscles from the age of 30 so to maintain good urethro genital health.
  • So important do they think pelvic floor exercises are to men's health some health professionals are even saying these exercises should be taught to boys in school.
  • The best news is male pelvic floor exercise is a totally natural erectile dysfunction remedy that in many cases could make unnecessary the need for ED medication.
  • Men having strong healthy pelvic floor muscles have been shown to have stronger erections and harder erections.
  • Men who do pelvic floor exercises are able to get concious control over their pelvic floor muscles allowing them (and their partners) to experience better sex.
  • Men having strong healthy pelvic floor muscles are able to maintain erection where once veinal leakage was a problem.
(The plain unavoidable fact is - many men suffer from veinal leakage as the grow older)

Ok so just what and where are the pelvic floor muscles?

  • The pelvic floor muscle (pubococcygeus muscle or PC muscle) is a hammock like layer of muscle that is suspended from your pubic bone at the front to your coccyx (tailbone) at the rear.

And what do the pelvic floor muscles do?

  • The pelvic floor muscle (which both men and women have) forms the floor of the pelvic cavity, supporting the bladder, intestines, rectum and in men the prostate and women the uterus.
  • Amongst the pelvic floor muscle's functions in both men and women are
    - control of urine flow
    - bowel control
    - rhythmic contraction during orgasm
  • Both men and women can enhance their sex lives by developing strong pelvic floor muscles.
  • Pelvic floor muscle strength impacts many aspects of lower body health and continence. So throughout life regularly exercising your pelvic floor muscles will pay huge dividends.

How can I find my pelvic floor muscle?

  • You can locate the pelvic floor muscle by placing a finger behind your scrotum while urinating.
Having done this, attempt to stop the flow of urine. As you do so, you should feel the pelvic floor muscle contract.
All Kegel pelvic floor exercises are based around contracting the pelvic floor muscle in this way.
Once you have got the feel for what you need to do through this urination exercise, you should be able to perform perform Kegel exercises with ease.
We should stress that this first exercise is only to enable you to identify the pubic floor muscle.
However, should you have a problem with dribbling after urination, try contracting the pelvic floor muscles a few times to expel the last few drops.

What do Kegel exercises for men do?

  • Strenghtening your pelvic muscles benefits you in many ways, regardless of age, but especially as you get older.
  • The younger guys amongst you will be delighted to know that strong pelvic floor muscles result in
    • Stronger erections
    • Harder erections
    • Enhanced ability to be able to control ejaculation
      (no more premature ejaculation)
    • Enhanced ejaculatory experience
    • Enhanced angle of dangle. (If you've ever wondered why some guys penises appear to almost touch their stomachs and wanted the same proud erection to show your girlfriend then Kegals are the way to go)
  • It goes without saying that the benefits of practicing pelvic floor exercises from as early an age as possible will stay with you for as long as you do them
-and knowing what you now know, what young guy wouldn't want the benefits?
  • As men get older their problem often becomes the exact reverse of those they experienced in their youth.
Premature ejaculation for most of us older guys is no longer a problem. Now maintaining a hard enough erection for penetrative sex is.

At least a part of the problem is down to the pelvic floor muscles weakening as we age.

Weak pelvic floor muscles can also lead to that annoying last dribble of urine that many of us experience when we take a leak - and in some men the much more serious problem of urinary incontinance.

If you recognise any of these symptoms of aging then you owe it to yourself to start practicing Kegal exercises for men

How do Kegel exercises for men help me?

  • When we took a look at the search terms men were most likely to use on the internet when they were looking for erection help information we were able to compile the following list:
    • maintain erection
    • weak erection
    • longer erection
    • harder erection
    • maintaining erection
    • stronger erection
    • erection help
    • erection difficulty
    • erection enhancer
    • keeping an erection
    • erection exercise
    • loss of erection
    • losing erection
    • improve erection
  • While the underlying causes and the degree of erectile dysfunction may vary, in almost all cases, either alone or in conjuction with other erectile dysfunction treatment, Kegel exercises for men will be of benefit.
  • It is well to remember here that the penis, during erection, is in essense a hydraulically powered apparatus that relies on blood flow to make and maintain it hard.
To gain erection, blood is pumped into your penis.
The more blood that is pumped in and retained, the harder erection you have.
To maintain erection, the act of pumping blood in causes the blood to become trapped as the penis becomes hard, until chemical messages signal its release.
(For a more detailed explanation of how you get an erection see
    Biology of an erection)
    • Pelvic floor exercises for men help this process because the stronger your pelvic floor muscles, the more easily can the blood be trapped in your penis, allowing you amongst other things to maintain an erection for longer.
  • It's in our deepest nature that one of the first things we as men notice is when our penises aren't performing as well as they once did.
Although it's not immediately obvious, your erect penis is the most visible sign that your blood circulation is functioning properly

Always remember, any erection difficulty is a strong warning sign that your blood circulation is in less than tip top condition and it is advisable that you make a trip to your doctor.

How long do male Kegel exercises take to get results?

  • You should start seeing a gradual improvement from the time you start doing Kegels, but as with any muscle training exercise the more you do pelvic floor exercises and the longer you do them for, the better the results become.

You should expect it to take between 3 to 6 months of daily exercise to get the full benefit and daily maintainence exercise once results have been achieved.
