How You Get An Erection

For you to understand how Viagra (or any other ED medication) works, you first need to know something about how an erection occurs in the first place.
As you know, erection happens when the penis fills with blood and becomes rigid. This results as the outcome of some kind of mental or physical erotic stimulation or expectation.
Your penis contains two chambers which run the length of the penis and which are filled with a spongy tissue. This is known as the corpora cavernosa.
The spongy tissue of the the corpora cavernos is composed of smooth muscles, veins and arteries, spaces and fibrous tissue.
Encasing the corpora cavernosa is a membrane called the tunica albuginea.
Underneath the corpora cavernosa runs the urethra, which has as its main function to channel urine fron the body but which also, during ejaculation, has the dual function of transporting seminal fluid and sperm.
When erotic sensory and mental excitation occurs, the brain and local nervous system (specifically the parasympathetic nervous system) produce impulses which cause the muscles of the corpora cavernosa to relax, letting blood fill the its spongy cavities.
As the blood pressurises the the corpora cavernosa the penis grows in size and becomes hard.
During this process the tunica albuginia functions to contain the blood in the the corpora cavernosa thus maintaining erection.
