Summary

  • In our introduction to Erectile Dysfunction Causes:
    - we looked at how E.D. could have either a psychological or a physical cause
    - and how the older you get the more likely the cause of erectile dysfunction is to be physiological.

    - With this in mind, in this section we will go into Physiological Erectile Dysfunction Causes - and why this might cause erection problems - in greater detail.

If you have not already read it, your erection biology primer will help you better understand physiological causes of E.D.

My Erection Problem.. Is Something Physical Wrong?

  • If Erectile dysfunction is caused by a physical problem, it will most likely have developed slowly over time and you may have been noticing a gradual decline in your ability to get or maintain an erection.

It is usually found that physiological sexual dysfunction is linked to lifestyle or an underlying medical condition and that once the root cause has been addressed, the erection problem can be readily remedied.

Generally this kind of impotance will fall into one of three categories:

  • Damage to, or degeneration of, the nervous system, giving rise to impairment of hormonal messages to the penis and also to a dirth of the chemical agents required by the penis to allow it to function properly during sexual intercourse.
  • The ability of blood to enter and fill the spongy tissue of the penis.
(See your erection biology primer to learn about the biological mechanisms driving your erection).
  • Inability of the penis to sufficiently trap the blood once it has entered the penis. (Known as veinal leakage).

If your doctor suspects a physiological problem when examining your erection difficulty, these are the areas he will be looking at when trying to pin down the exact cause.

First your doctor will want to know how long you have had the problem and will try to assess it's severity.

When making a diagnosis your doctor will be taking into account

    • Your overall state of health
    • Whether you can gain erection at all, and if not for how long it has been a problem ( i.e. is it an indication of something more serious)
    • Your ability to maintain erection
    • Whether you are capable of attaining a hard erection or even a weak erection.

The kinds of thing your doctor will be looking for are

nerve damage, which will affect Veinal Leakage, Prostate
